How to Build a Consensus Model
Activity
Build a shared model to explain how disasters disrupt radio communication
paper-pencil
15-30 minutes
camp, small groups
In this activity, learners collaboratively develop an initial consensus model to explain how radio communication systems work, using Hurricane Maria’s impact on Puerto Rico in 2017 as the context. After watching a video about the destruction of radio infrastructure during the storm, learners create diagrammatic models to show how communication was possible before the hurricane and why it became more difficult after. Learners share their models with peers, identifying key components of the communication system as well as areas of uncertainty. As a group, they build a class consensus model that captures and connects their ideas, questions, and gaps in understanding. This model serves as a foundation that learners will revisit and refine as they investigate radio technologies in other activities on this site.
